Why Cleanups Matter

Skipping a Cleanup Doesn't Save Money — It Costs More Later

Every Illinois homeowner knows the feeling: spring arrives and your yard looks like winter buried whatever you had going on. Leaves matted into the lawn, dead branches down, beds full of debris — and suddenly the "I'll deal with it later" pile has gotten very large.

Left unaddressed, neglected fall and spring cleanups cause real damage to your landscape investment — the same landscape you paid to have designed and installed properly.

  • Matted leaves and debris kill grass and promote lawn disease over winter
  • Beds left uncleaned allow weeds to establish root systems before spring
  • Unpruned shrubs and grasses grow unchecked and lose their shape
  • Damaged or dead material left in place spreads disease to healthy plants
  • No winterization prep means perennials and tender plants don't survive Illinois winters

A Landscape That Knows No Seasons Is One That Doesn't Last

Central Illinois has real winters. The freeze-thaw cycles, the heavy wet leaf fall, the hard frosts — they all work on your landscape all year, whether you're out there maintaining it or not.

A spring cleanup activates your landscape for the growing season. A fall cleanup protects your investment heading into the cold. Together, they're the annual maintenance that keeps everything you've built looking the way it should.

Spring Lawn Cleanup in Iroquois & Kankakee County — Wake Your Landscape Up Right

Spring is when small problems become big ones if you ignore them — and when a thorough cleanup sets your landscape up for the best-looking season of the year. Here's what our spring lawn cleanup service includes:

Leaf & Debris Removal

Complete removal of winter leaf buildup from turf, beds, and hardscape areas. Not just blowing to the edge — actually out.

Bed Cleanouts

Clear plant beds of dead plant material, matted leaves, and early emerging weeds before they establish.

Shrub & Ornamental Pruning

Cut back ornamental grasses, prune winter-damaged shrubs, and shape plantings for the growing season.

Bed Edge Cleanup

Clean up and redefine bed borders for a sharp, intentional look heading into the season.

Winter Damage Assessment

Jon walks the property and flags any landscape elements that need attention — broken branches, frost heave, or plants that didn't make it.

Mulch Application (Optional)

Fresh mulch after a spring cleanup locks in the look, retains moisture, and keeps weeds down through summer. Available as an add-on.

🍂 Fall Cleanup

Fall Lawn Cleanup in Gilman IL — Protect Your Landscape Before Illinois Winter Hits

Fall is when the work you do now determines how good your yard looks next spring. Leave the leaves sitting. Skip the winterization. Rush through the bed cleanup. And you'll spend half of April undoing what October and November did.

Our fall cleanup service handles everything that needs to happen before the ground freezes:

Fall leaves covering a lawn in central Illinois — exactly the buildup Harkins Landscaping removes before the ground freezes

Leaf Removal & Hauling

Full property leaf cleanup before freeze — removing the debris load that would otherwise mat and suffocate your turf over winter.

Perennial Cutback

Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses to the right height before winter — protecting root systems and prepping for clean spring regrowth.

Bed Winterization

Clean up plant beds and apply protective mulch layer where needed to insulate root zones through Illinois freeze-thaw cycles.

Final Mow & Edging

Last cut of the season at the correct height — too long and it mats; too short and it stresses the grass heading into dormancy.

Hardscape Prep

Blow out walkways, patios, and driveways; flag any hardscape issues that should be addressed before freeze-thaw causes further settling.

End-of-Season Notes

Jon leaves notes on anything to watch for next spring — plant health observations, areas to address, recommendations for the season ahead.

Why It's Different With Harkins

You're Not Scheduling a Stranger. You're Calling Jon.

Most cleanup companies send whoever's available. Harkins sends the person who knows your property — because we likely designed or maintained it. That changes everything about the quality of the work.

We Know Your Plants

When we built your landscape, we selected those plants. We know what needs to be cut back hard, what's tender, and what to protect. Not every shrub gets the same treatment.

Local Illinois Knowledge

Central Illinois winters aren't like everywhere else. Jon has managed landscapes through freeze-thaw cycles here for 16 years — he knows what prep actually matters for your zone.

We Catch Things Others Miss

Because we know your property, we notice when something changed — a plant that's struggling, a retaining wall that's shifted slightly, a drainage issue developing. We flag it so you can address it early.

Same Team, Year After Year

You don't re-explain your landscape to a new crew each season. We've been there. We remember. Consistent care from people who understand your property over time.

Jon did a great job adding river rock under our deck. The job wasn't easy, fun or creative like most of their other water features or shorelines, but they were quick, on budget and awesome to work with on our project.

Book Early — Cleanup Season Fills Fast

Spring and fall are the busiest times of the year. Clients who schedule ahead get their preferred dates. Last-minute requests often end up waiting — and in central Illinois, timing matters.

Best booked: February – March

Ideal cleanup timing is after the last hard frost, before heavy spring growth begins — typically April in Iroquois and Kankakee counties.

Fall Cleanup Window

Common Questions

Spring & Fall Cleanup Questions — Answered

Still have questions? Call Jon at (815) 549-5603.

What does a spring lawn cleanup service include near Gilman, IL?

Our spring lawn cleanup includes leaf and debris removal from turf and beds, bed cleanouts, shrub and ornamental grass pruning, bed edge cleanup, and a property walk-through to note any winter damage. Mulch application is available as an add-on. Every cleanup is done by Harkins — the same team that maintains (and likely installed) your landscape.

When should I schedule a fall cleanup in Iroquois County?

Book your fall cleanup in August or September to secure your preferred date — fall is one of our busiest seasons. The actual cleanup work happens after leaves have dropped but before the ground freezes hard, typically October through early November in central Illinois. If you wait until the last minute, availability can become limited quickly.

Do you do seasonal cleanups for properties you didn't install?

Yes. While many of our cleanup clients are also landscape design or maintenance clients, we're happy to take on seasonal cleanup work for properties we haven't worked on before. Jon will do a quick walk of the property before quoting so he can see what's there and price it accurately.

How much does a spring or fall cleanup cost in Kankakee County?

Cleanup pricing depends on property size, the amount of work needed, and what's included. There's no universal flat rate — a quarter-acre suburban lot and a rural acre with extensive planted beds are very different jobs. We always quote before we start. Contact Jon for a quick quote specific to your property.

What's the difference between a spring cleanup and regular lawn maintenance?

A spring cleanup is a one-time seasonal service — it's the reset after winter. It involves removing accumulated debris, cutting back dormant plant material, and assessing the property for damage. Regular lawn maintenance is ongoing — mowing, edging, trimming on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. Many clients do both: a spring cleanup to start the season, then ongoing maintenance through the growing season.

Do you remove all the leaves or just from the lawn?

We remove leaves from turf areas, plant beds, walkways, driveways, and patio areas — everything on the property, not just the open grass. Leaf debris left in beds and on hardscape causes just as many problems as what's left on the lawn. We haul everything off the property unless you'd prefer it composted on-site.

Can I schedule both spring and fall cleanup at the same time?

Absolutely — and we'd encourage it. Many of our clients set up both cleanups at the start of the year. It guarantees your preferred scheduling windows, and for ongoing maintenance clients we build it into the annual plan automatically. Contact Jon to discuss an annual maintenance agreement that includes both seasonal cleanups.
